Ok so I decided to try the 3.5" internal hdd mod for my new (old) phat jtag and loosely followed these instructions:

did the sata data wiring like this:

and took the power for sata power cable from these points:
![]()
(red for 5V, blue for ground and yellow for 12V, correct?)
The problem is I get 2 red lights (leds 1&3 I think, upper and lower left ones when console is horizontally placed) when booting with the new 3.5" drive plugged in, fans briefly spin up and that's it.
The weird thing is it boots normally when I unplug the hard drive but leave the wiring still there so I think I didn't screw anything up really bad with the wiring but something isn't still quite right with the drive.
Does this sound more like a shorting problem or something else? I have checked most points I could with a multimeter and no obvious shorts but can't check the sata data cable because my multimeter pins can't reach inside the other end female plug where the pins are.
Edit: Got it booting with the hdd without the metal case and the hdd was recognized in the dash as unformatted drive, so I guess it is about something shorting under the mobo when in the case. Will update if I found the culprit.
