Microsoft has issued a statement regarding Kinect for Xbox One no longer being required:
IGN got the news via their AMA with Xbox Corporate Vice President Marc Whitten, where he revealed that Xbox One owners will be able to use all of the console’s core functions regardless of whether the new Kinect sensor is connected.
“Like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor,” Whitten said.
“You have the ability to completely turn the sensor off in your settings. When in this mode, the sensor is not collecting any information. Any functionality that relies on voice, video, gesture or more won’t work. We still support using it for IR blasting in this mode. You can turn the sensor back on at any time through settings, and if you enter into a required Kinect experience (like Kinect Sports Rivals for instance), you’ll get a message asking if you want to turn the sensor back on in order to continue.”
This is contrary to what Microsoft initially announced back in May - “Kinect does require to be connected to Xbox One in all cases.”
This is the latest reversal in Microsoft’s controversial Xbox One rules – they started by changing their policies on DRMs, then changed their self-publishing rules, and now they’ve changed the Kinect rules.
Could this further suggest a retail Xbox One without the Kinect in the future?

“When we first announced Xbox One, we did intend for Kinect to be plugged in for the console to work,” the statement reads. “As we’ve progressed in the development cycle we’ve revised our approach so that the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in. Xbox One is still designed to work best with Kinect plugged in.”
